I just reinstalled Windows Vista HP on my desktop computer yesterday. I use a Cradlepoint MBR1000 router to access the internet and files on my laptop (and visa versa). The router is connected to the desktop via a CAT5 cable into the LAN port. A USB720 modem is connected to the router (provides internet access wirelessly).I have set up my desktop computer for file sharing and printer sharing. Up until I reinstalled Vista (for unrelated reasons), this all worked fine. Now, though it has ceased working. I have attempted toreset all the permissions to wide open -- EVERYONE to read, write and control files/folders -- on both computers. I have turned off the firewall thinking that was a barrier. Nothing has helped. I am now growing bald!When I attempt to access any drive/folder/file from the laptop that is on the desktop, I see this: Windows cannot access \\Home-pc\c - Check the spellig of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.So I did.And....I see: "c" is available but the user account that you are logged with was denied access. Windows cannot further diagnose the problem because network diagnostics does not know the user name and password required to connect to the shared folder.Make sure you have typed the path correctly and you have permission to access the shared folder. If you are trying to access the shared folder with a user name and password that is different from what you used to log on to this computer, ensure that you have entered them correctly. Hi, Thank you for posting. Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following: 1. Ensure that the computers are on the same network and the same workgroup. 2. Please check if the computers can ping each other with the computers IP Address and computers names. 3. Access computers share with both \\XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX(IP Address)\folder and \\computer name\folder [type them one by one in the Run command (Win+R)] to see if it works. 4. Check the basic security settings: 1) Ensure you log on both computers with the Administrator account. 2) Check both Sharing and Security settings on all of the computers shares properties, and make sure that you have assigned the Full-Control permissions to Everyone. 5. Please perform a Clean Boot on both computers to check the issue. Clean boot ================= 1) Click the Start Button type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search box, and then press Enter. Note: If prompted, please click Continue on the User Account Control (UAC) window. 2) Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3) Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". Then, restart the computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK. NOTE: we can go back to normal boot by running msconfig again and checking on Normal Startup in the General tab. In the Clean Boot Environment, the third party services and applications are disabled, please check if the issue reoccurs at this time. If the problem does not occur, it indicates that the problem is related to one application or service we have disabled. You may use the MSCONFIG tool again to re-enable the disabled item one by one to find out the culprit.
